As any significant awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored that year
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
